I am looking for information on my 4 x Great Grandfather Charles Haggerty. He was born in Donegal in c1826. He emigrated to Scotland prior to 1853. This is what I know already:

1826             Born in Donegal Ireland

1846             ??. Birth of son John Haggerty (as per 1861 Scottish Census) ? Unsure of relationship, may be brother.

1853             7 May. Birth of daughter Sarah Haggertie in Dumfries. Mother Sarah Thomson born Wigtown, Scotland. Cannot find marriage records

1855             4 June. Birth of daughter Mary Haggertie

Charles was in and out of prison in Scotland and prison records give place of birth as Donegal. He has multiple spellings of his surname Haggerty/Heggarty/Hagarty/Haggertie

  • Steph,

1855 was the first year of birth registration in Scotland. In that first year the birth certificates contained a lot of extra information which was dropped in later years (due to the time it took to gather). Mary Haggartie’s birth certificate should tell you where and when the parents married, where and when they were born and how many children they had had at that date, alive and dead.

What looks to be Mary’s birth cert was registered in Dumfries Burgh GROS ref: 821/1/122. You can view that on Scotlansdpeople for less than £2. (Spelled as HAGGARTIE). Mother's maiden name THOMSON.

If Charles died in Scotland his death certificate should give you his parents names and occupations.

Few RC parishes in Co Donegal have baptism records for the 1820s so you may not be able to trace his birth there.

    Hi Elwyn

your information has been amazing and Mary's birth certificate has close some gaps for me as i now have her parents wedding date and siblings at that time. I have the siblings baptism certificates but this has been a great find.

Sadly any info on Charles' is proving a bit more elusive, but this is a great start, so thank you.

If I could ask one more question, I have uploaded mary's birth certificate and i am unable to make sense of the line above Charles' place of birth and I am hoping that with your knowledge of Ireland you may be able to decipher it for me. It looks like 25 Borier? County, Donegal, Ireland.

    Many Thanks

  • Steph,

The birth certificate says "Dealer in rags. Aged 25. Born in County Donegal, Ireland." (Sadly no parish is given. Quite often you get the parish).

I assume you know to search the English Marriage records for that 1850 marriage in Carlisle. That should give you Charles' father's name and occupation.
