My great-great grandfather, James Henry Burns, was born in 1853/1854 and came to the US in 1879. His parents are both listed as unknown on his death certificate, so we have no way to continue the research. The family rumor is that he was orphaned and/or abandoned. Any insights or thoughts are welcome!

Do you have more info about Henry? When and where he married, and to whom? Names of his children in order? Place he lived in the USA?
His marriage record may include his parents' names--and he would have provided this info himself.
Have you seen his obituary? Headstone? These sometimes have place of birth.
