Alex was 5' 6 3/4" with a fresh complexion, hazel eyes and dark brown hair. He was 20 years old when he traded in his labouring occupation to become a soldier in the 55th Regiment of Foot on the 13th of October, 1824 in Belfast. His period of service was to be unlimited. He was born in Down Patrick, a small town about south of Belfast in County Down, Northern Ireland.
