I am searching for evidence of my grandmother's family. The name is Downs and they were reprotedly from Liscannor. My great-great grandfather was James Downs, listed as born in 1816 in Liscannor. He married Mary Ann (or Martha) Murtagh (sp?) in 1843. They emigrated to Canada (?) and ended up settling in Emmett, Michigan. Two of their children were born in Ireland, the rest in MI.

I visited Liscannor last year but was unable to find out anything about this part of my family.

  • The RC baptism records for Liscannor began in 1843 and marriage records in 1866. So records for your relation are not available.

  • Thank you for clarifying that.

Is it possible to find any record of the children that were born there and maybe baptized there?

    Their names and birthdates:

Thomas Downs  circa 11/22/1844 (listed as both his birth date and baptism date)

Mary Downs  born circa 2/25/1847 (her baptism appears to have been in Liscannor)

I sure appreciate your help with this mystery!

  • Cecelia,

Yes, I found their baptism records on the www.clarelibrary.ie site. On the homepage, go to the right under 'donated material', then click on births/baptisms, marriages, deaths. Scroll down to Liscannor and search three ways - father's surname, mother's surname, date.

The surname Downs is given as Drony for Thomas and Downey for Mary.

Thomas: 22 Nov 1844, parents: James Drony & Mary Murtagh, townland - Ballyfaude (aka Ballyfaudeen), sponsors: Michael Fitzpatrick & Biddy Healy

Mary: 25 Feb 1847, parents: James Downey & Mary Murtugh, no townland listed, sponsors: Michael and Margaret Stack

The Downs surname and variations does not appear in the 1855 Griffith's Valuation for Ballyfaudeen, so they probably emigrated prior to that year or did not hold a tenancy.

I too have Liscannor roots with my great great grandmother Mary Fitzpatrick being from the townland of Killaspuglonane.

    Regards,

  • One correction to navigating the library site...on the homepage, under County Clare on the right, first click on 'genealogy and family history'.

  • Carolyn-

Thank you so much for this. It is all starting to make more sense than it used to!
