Looking for assistance in finding details of the marriage records of Daniel Dwyer to Mary ? in Cork c. 1830.

Daniel was the son of William (O’)Dwyer also of Cork. Daniel and Mary had two children, Edward and Daniel, in Ireland before moving to London c. 1845. Family stories suggest Daniel was born 1801 and married a Mary Cummins but my research suggests he was born closer to 1776 and married a much younger Mary Hanrahan.

I’m hoping this information will allow me to continue to track the family backwards. I have no details of William O’Dwyer other than he died c. 1856 and was allegedly shot defending his priest.

I located a February 23 1830 marriage record of a Daniel Dwyer and a Mary Hanrahan in Bandon. However, I did not find the baptismal records for Edward and Daniel. However, I did find a May 19 1844 baptismal record for a Catherine Dwyer with Daniel and Mary as parents and the church was Bandon.

  • Tom,

Per Ancestry.com, in the 1851 Census for Hampstead, Middlesex, England, there is a Daniel Dwyer (1776) and family, Mary (1801), Edward (1826), Daniel (1835). All born in Ireland. The 1861 Census for Hampton Middlesex shows Daniel born in Abbeyman perhaps Abbeymahon, Cork and Mary born in Rasmore, perhaps Rathmore, Cork. There is a Daniel Dwyer death record in 1866, born in 1774.

  • Tom,

There is a tree on Ancestry username, Thomas Dwyer. Is this your tree? It has information about your Dwyer family including a transcribed record for Daniel's baptism in 1833 in Enniskeane and Desertserges Parish, Cork, parents- Daniel Dwyer and Mary Hourahan. Note original registry is very fuzzy and difficult to read.

  • Mary, Roger,

Thankyou. Yes that is my Ancestry tree. I believe those records in Middlesex to be correct but cannot find information of Catherine’s marriage (if she ever did) or death in England. Further, I was hoping that if I could confirm the marriage details of Daniel to Mary, whichever Mary that is, I could find information about Daniel’s father.

I also find it strange that records of Catherine’s baptism exist but not of her brothers.

Here is a link to the Bandon parish register  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0017  The index does not show any gaps in baptismal records. Maybe you could scan the years when you think the two sons were baptized. Possibly the entries are illegible. Possibly the priest did not add their records to the book as an oversight. Maybe they were baptized in a nearby church which no longer has records back to 1820s/1830s.

  • Hi Tom

Wondering where in the world you are? I have looked in Australia for records, only because I have seen Dwyer/Hourahan families here.... so not really a valid reason for looking. But a little out of the box thinking....

Wondering if your Dwyer was military?  Reason I ask is IF the Dwyer father was military, the births may not be in the normal locations like parish registers (should be but may not be)... they could be listed in the British Army Births, which are on Find MY Past.  That applies to births worldwide, including Ireland.  I can see a lot of Dwyers born in Australia to military men (1788-1850s), their registration clearly says British Army Births (or British births overseas/military etc) These men served here during our convict era and whilst we were a colony/several colonies... then returned to Ireland or England when their service ended. They DID bring their wife and children with them, depending where they served.  We generally know our ancestors lived in specific locations and for the military, we say they lived in Ireland, but served overseas... but some of the overseas services saw births and baptisms to their wife.  With the education back then, the children could have believed they were born in Ireland because that is all they remember.

Hope that helps.... if he IS military.

Always happy to help from this side of the world if there are records needed, just ask.

    Cheers.

    Lilly
