Hi Folks. I thought I’d share some research I’ve been doing on my Sheehan family roots in Maulagallane townland near Sneem. Via the Schools Collection at https://www.duchas.ie/en, I found an entry titled “Moulagallane” (see attached) that documented how the Sheehans, as land agents of the Blands, gained a large holding in townland after the Famine at the expense of other tenants. After some digging that involved a visit to the Valuation Office in Dublin, I discovered that the account in the Schools Collection was accurate. The Sheehans went from leasing 34 acres in Scrahannagaur townland in 1852 as per Griffith’s Valuation to 184 acres in Maulagallane as per the 1856-1862 revision books. And yes, this was at the expense of other tenants who lost their holdings (see attached). I guess I have two questions I’m hoping the group could help me with: First, how would I find out if the Sheehans were actually land agents for the Blands, and how did they get such a good deal with the Bland family, and second, what happened to the displaced tenants? I’ve looked for eviction records, and haven’t had much luck. Maybe I’m just looking in the wrong places. I have a theory that this was all part of the post-famine land redistribution and would love to do this comparison for all the Bland holdings at the time.
