I and granddaughter will be arriving by cruise ship in Cork on August 31, 2024 and I plan on visiting Templederry and would love information on Templederry from the late 1800s and early 1900s.  I have contacted Templederry parish earlier today.  

I have a copy of a letter from 1932  certifies that according to the Baptismal Registry of the Catholic Church of Templederry my grandmother, Margaret M. Cashen was born on February 15 1893 qnd baptized on February 16, 1893 signed by an unreadable first name with Cunnimgham PP as last name.  She was the daughter of Thomas Cashen and Mary Maher.   My understanding is that the letter was obtained as proof of birth for social secuirty.   I have a conflicting birth certificate which lists the birth as April 2, 1893.   Until about 10 years ago, my family believed that my grandmother's actual birth certificate had been destoryed in a fire.  

I am looking for information about the Cashen family in Ireland during that time period and information about Templederry duirng that time period and suggestions for what I should see.   I have some information on most of my grandmother's siblings, most of whom emigrated to the US.  (My grandmother emigrated in about 1906).

  • The discrepancy between the birthdates on the baptism and birth certificate will likely be because it was registered late.  There was a small financial penalty for late birth registration.  You were supposed to register within something like 3 weeks of the birth but many people didn’t get around to it promptly. Unlike today, there was no child allowance from the state to claim so no obvious urgency in registering it straight away, especially if you lived in a rural area some distance from the local registrar’s office. When they did finally register it, parents often simply changed the child’s date of birth to one that didn’t incur a penalty.  It was quite common, and looks likely to have happened in this case.

  • The Social Security Act was not signed until August 1935 so likely the baptismal record was for another purpose possibly Naturalization.

    Below are the 1901 and 1911 census records for Margaret and her family. They lived in Cloghinch townland in Templederry civil parish.
