I recently had a DNA match that provided me with the names of Catherine's parents as John Murphy and Catherine.  The match was descended from one of Catherine's younger siblings and grew up hearing stories from his great grandmother and her sister who had emigrated to the US.  His family hadn't gotten any further back than Catherine's parents.

What I have:

Catherine Murphy married John Conway (possibly 1830-1831 based on the date of birth of their oldest child.  I am thinking that they married in Kilmihil, since it was Catherine's parish

1. Michael born 15 May 1832 (possibly in Kilmihil)

2. Patrick baptized 15 Dec 1833 in Parish of Kilmaley, County Clare

3. Hanna born Oct 1865 (possibly in Kilmaley)

4. John baptized 25 Feb 1838 in Parish of Kilmaley, County Clare

5. Timothy baptized 14 Feb 1839 in Parish of Kilmaley, County Clare (most indices have transcribed the name in the register as Kitty, but you it is really Timothy)

6. Dennis baptized 26 May 1842 in Parish of Kilmaley, County Clare

7. Mary baptized 28 Oct 1844 in Parish of Kilmaley, County Clare

8. Bridget baptized 10 Oct 1847 in Parish of Kilmaley, County Clare

John Conway and Catherine Murphy and all the children eventually immigrated to the US.

Are their any records available for Kilmihil for the time period 1800 - 1832?

  • I could not find Hanna's baptism, are you sure the date is correct 1865?  It is a long time after the other births. The baptismal register for Kilmihil starts in 1849 so no luck with Michael. Marriages for Kilmihil 1849-1869

Hello - not sure I can help with records but feel free to check my Ancestry page at Kitty Eisele - the Conways are my family; Catherine's son Patrick is my great-great grandfather.

I found a record for Hannah Conway - several that mention her birth in 1835, not 65 - including a page of the NJ 1905 Census - image 266 if helpful - couldn't get it to upload here.  You can try:  https://www.ancestry.com/sharing/19519622?mark=7b22746f6b656e223a22626e…

There are many Conway descendants in Wisconsin, where I believe John Conway is buried and I have a recent photo of his grave.  Strangely there are hints of debtor's prison or the workhouse for a Catherine Murphy Conway in the 1880s in England but I thought she would have been in this country by then, as many of her children were, and obviously her husband, who died in 1860 in Wisconsin Rapids. There is also a record of a Cath Conway in a NY Almshouse in the 1864.  Not sure if either of these are the same - since it seemed to be a close family, and I don't imagine they'd let their mother waste in workhouse.   Catherine died in 1889 in Ft. Lee, New Jersey, where daughter Hannah was living.

This seems to be the baptismal record for her daughter Bridget - https://www.ancestry.com/sharing/19519899?mark=7b22746f6b656e223a225477…

  • Thank you Eileen and Kitty.

Yes, Eileen, it should be 1835 not 1865 for Hanna.

Hello, Cousin Kitty.  I'm thinking that Hanna and her mother possibly lived together until her mother passed away.  Hanna then lived with her sister, Bridget and her husband, John McBride.
