Hello, I am looking for help finding out about the ancestors of Charles McManus, born Sept. 19, 1819 in Loughinisland. Parish records indicate his father was Pat and family records indicate his mother was Margaret Kelly. He came to the US as a young man with a cousin, John Kelly. Pat may have been born about 1795 in Magheralin and his father may have been MIchael, born about 1760 in Magheralin. Those are guesses. Any help would be much appreciated.

regards,

  • Loughinisland RC records start in 1806. Researching before that may be challenging.

  • Thank you for the reply. I appreciate it. I hoped something new (like his parents' marriage info) might be possible to discover since the last time I checked but perhaps not. If you do think of something please let me know.

  • His parents might have married before records began in 1806 or they may have married in a different parish. (Tradition was to marry in the bride’s church so if she came from another parish nearby, they may have married there.  But again records may not exist. Very few rural parishes in Ireland have records before the 1820s. If it is of any consolation, if you did find a marriage, a record from that era would not contain much information. Often just the date, the couples names and their 2 witnesses. No parents names or townlands, or anything like that.
