Tracing ancestors in Watergrasshill and Glanmire, Co. Cork.

Sharon Bikers, from Melbourne, was tracing her ancestry in Watergrasshill and Glanmire, Co. Cork. While she knew the parishes, she was unsure of the townlands. With names like Murphy and Barry the search for a townland was challenging. Sharon met IrelandXO volunteer Kieran Jordan in Watergrasshill.
Kieran explained that the church parish of Watergrasshill could be Ardnageehy and that there were five civil parishes in the parish. Land records are in civil parishes, and therefore it was necessary to search all the civil parishes when linking a name from a church parish to a civil parish.

Glanmire has two civil parishes. Having searched the civil parishes of Watergrasshill, it was possible to trace her ancestor, Thomas Murphy, Knockraha, the area she had from family records. Kieran was also able to help Sharon locate her ancestors in Tipperary. Sharon went away with a better understanding of the relationship between church and civil parishes, and a link to a webpage that gives more information.
