Andrew was born to Thomas Boyd and Fannie Ann Bell in 1896

Andrew's baptismal record could not be located and one civil birth record for Andrew Boyd registered in Bailieborough, July-Sept 1896 fits his details. Using the record for his brother Joseph, born 28th May 1890, this places the family in the townland of Drumeague and Corglass was the place of baptism and at that stage his father was a labourer.

In 1901, Andrew was 5 and living with his parents Thomas 47, Fanny 41 and his siblings James 14, Robert 12, William 10 and Joseph 9. They were in the townland of Garteneane, Bailieborough at this time and his father was still working as an agricultural labourer and renting from Thomas McAdam. In 1911, he was the only child living in Lisgar with his parents, they were married for 30 years and had nine children of whom eight had survived, records were found for three other children, Lizzie born 1881, Thomas born 1883 and John born 1885. At this stage his father, Thomas was a land holder and a farm labourer.  This may be Andrew’s siblings who had left home in 1911, William working as a servant for John James McAdam in Gartnaneane and Joseph for Richard McElwaine in Lisball. In 1901, Thomas was working for James Johnston in Lisnadarra while Elizabeth was working as a domestic servant for Thomas Young Chambers, a solicitor in Bailieborough. Caution is required here as there were a few Boyd families in the area with similar details. In 1911, this looks like Robert, attached to the Dublin Metropolitan police as a constable, age 22, born in Co Cavan and based in Kevin Street Barracks, Dublin. Robert then joined the 9th Battallion of the Royal Enniskillin Fusiliers and died on 17 August 1917, he was buried and a cross was erected to his memory at Lijssenthoek Military cemetery, Belguim.

According to his Grave registration documents, Sergeant Boyd, was the son of Thomas and Fanny Boyd of Corglass, Bailieborough and his plot may be found at XVII, AA, 19.

On 11 September 1920, Andrew sailed from Liverpool on board the Carmania, there were others on board from Bailieborough and they may have traveled together as they are together on the manifest.  He arrived in New York on 22 September 1920, he gave his address as Bailieborough and his father Thomas was his nearest relative, whose address was Corglass. He had paid for his own ticket, had $50 with him and was going permanently, to his brother-in-law George Brown, Hospital of Rest (sic), Enwood, New York.

Andrew could not be located in the 1930 Census, but in searching the Passenger Lists, he was listed as ‘not on board’ the Georgic from Liverpool on 15 December, 1933, his occupation was given as a Salesman and he had come from Corglass, Bailieborough and if he had traveled he would have been part of the Tourist Class. On the second part of this manifest it stated he was married and his address was 1189 Thomas Street, Hewlett, L. I. New York.  However, Andrew did manage to make this journey as he joined this ship on 16 December, 1933 in Cobh.

In 1940, this may be him because of the Brown connection and the house number and street matches the previous record.  Here he was a proprietor, he owned his own house which was valued at $8000 at 1189 Thomas Street, Hempstead, Nassau, New York.  The only issue was that New York was given as his place of birth, however, living with him was his sister, Martha Brown (b. 1892), it stated she was single, born in the Irish Free State and running a beauty parlour, while his wife Helen was a beautician.  Helen (b. 1899) and their Irish born child Ellen (b. 1933) were living in the Irish Free State in 1935.  Martha may have been his sister-in-law

He completed his 1942 US Draft form, it stated his date of birth was 4 August 1896 and he was living in 1189 Thomas Street, Hewlett, Nassau, New York, Helen Boyd, was the person who would know his address and he was self employed at 12, Irving Place Woodmere, Nassau, New York.  No further records could be found for this family.

The photograph is of the church where Andrew was baptised and his brother Robert is remembered inside on a memorial to WWI dead.
