Charles was born in 1906, the son of James Joseph O’Reilly (1853-) and Anne O’Reilly (Nee Clarke) (1867-1945) of Corravilla, Shercock, Co. Cavan.

He was one of twelve children including Frances, (1886-1964) John (1886- ), twins Patrick and Terence (1889- ), Peter (1891- ), Bernard (1891-1980), Margaret (1896- ), James (1898- ), Laurence (1902- ) and Ellen (1910- ).

Charles first left for America with his sister Ellen on 27th May 1928.  He traveled back to Ireland a few years later and was listed on the manifest of the Laconia on 17th September 1933, where he is travelling from Galway.  There he lists his occupation as a labourer and he was in possession of $25 and he was going to Laurence, his brother’s address in Chicago.  He also stated that he had spent from 1928 to 1933 in USA.

He was naturalised on 13th July 1942 and his sister in law Delia was his witness.  He gave his address as 60, Ada Street, Chicago, Illinois.

He married Mary Muldoon from Galway on 17th March 1938 and a year later they had their first son Patrick. They are in the 1940 US Census in Ada Street, Illinois, Cook County, Chicago and he is working as a Labourer in a Packing House. Their second son also called Charles was born in 1940 and they had ten children in all.  They raised their family in South Racine Avenue in Chicago.  According to Charles Junior’s story by Jeffrey Anderson they were raised in a strict Irish Catholic area on Chicago’s South side.  Charles supported his family by working as a night watchman at the Stockyards on Racine and 47th Street.  Charles B. Junior was a bright child and his parents hoped he would become a priest, as it was one way of getting a good education, but he had other ideas and to get out of the south side, he enlisted in the US Marines in 1958.  He traveled the world with them and eventually found his way back to America and to California.  There he became one of California’s most colourful and renowned trial lawyers. Charles B. Junior died on 9 September 2010.  

Charles Snr died on 10th April 1997 and his last residence was in Illinois.
