Mary Ann and Margaret Lee were born to John and Mary Lee Tour Newport Co Tipperary.

Mary Ann being the firstborn in the family of ten and the eldest of the two sisters. Margaret was second in the family with only eleven months between them and both born the same year in 1899. As there was insufficient work for young girls at the time they decided to emigrate to America. Their cousin John Hartigan was going over with his Aunt Bridget who had been home on holidays and they went back with her.  

They sailed on the same Ship “The Baltic” on the 4th of November arriving in New York 12th November 1920. Mary Ann was in good health, 5ft 5 in height, had brown eyes, brown hair and fair complexion. Margaret was also in good health was also 5ft 5 in height, blue eyes, brown hair and had a fair complexion. They paid their own passage over with Margaret having a $100 on her and Mary Ann had $35 on her person. They both went over to work as house maids and to stay with their aunt Mrs Thomas O’Brien Chicago Illinois. Thomas was their uncle; he was a brother to their mother.
