Mary Carrick married Thomas Moylan of Kiltrogue about 1864

Mary Moylan, aged 56 was a widow from Kiltrogue, Claregalway. She emigrated with her son John Moylan, aged 28 to her daughter Bessie who lived at  412 Union Ave., Chicago. Emigrated from Queenstown on 30th May 1907 on the Baltic arriving in Ellis Island on 8th June 1907.

Mary is one of a small number mentioned in this exhibition who were aged over 50 at the time of emigration. Like many people her age she left Ireland mostly because of the decision of her children to leave and due to the fact that she was a widow and probably had no other close family keeping her in Ireland.

  • She was my great- great grandmother. The mother of 7 living children, William, John, Malchay, Mary, Bess, Nora (my great grandmother), and Michael. All of her children immigrated to USA (Chicago area) with the exception of Malachy. He went off ot fight the Boer war, and was never heard from again. Wiliam and John worked for the railroad for time, Michael worked for Panama Canal and then for the City of Chicago. Mary and Bess went on to Marry Police officers. Nora worked as a domestic worker for a wealthy Jewish Merchant  before marrying Patrick West. So proud of my Claregallway heritage.
