In 1901, Patrick Ruxton (40) and his wife Kate (nee Duffy) (26) were living in Corgreagh, Co. Monaghan

They lived with their children Norah Anne (3) and James who was 3 months old. They were a farming family. Their parish was Aughnamullen West, however baptismal records are not available for this parish. In 1911, the family included Norah A (12), James (10), William (8), Patrick (7), Thomas (4) and Mary K aged 1, the census stated that they had six children and that they were all living. James’ birth was registered in the first quarter of 1901 and William’s birth was registered between April and June 1903, in Carrickmacross. 

William Ruxton emigrated on 19th January 1930 from Cobh on board the Samaria. He stated that his father was Patick Ruxton from Corcreagh, Shercock, Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan.  He had $25 and a ticket to his final destination which was paid for by his brother. He was 5’7”, had fair complexion, fair hair and blue eyes. He was a farmer and was heading to his brother James Ruxton, whose address was C/o P. Duffy, 80 Washington Avenue, Yonkers, New York. James had emigrated leaving Queenstown on 9th February, 1925 arriving in America on 23rd February 1925. He stated that his father’s address was Corgreagh, Shercock, Co. Cavan. He went to his cousin James Gough, who lived at 32 Cedar Avenue, New York, he was 5’5” with a dark complexion, black hair and blue eyes.  Williams first trip to America was on the Cameronia, leaving from Londonderry on the 8th May 1926, again to his brother James.

In 1930, William was living with his cousin Owen McGeough and his wife Catherine and their three children Rosan (7), Luke (6), Catherine (2) and Eugene (1), in Ashburton Avenue, Yonkers, Westchester, New York. William was working as a gardener in the floral industry. On 30th October 1934 he married Bridget Collins in Kings, New York. In 1940, he was living with his wife and two children, Mary (1) and Patrick age 5 months, he was working as a bartender and owned his own home. On 7th March 1950 Bridget was naturalized as a US citizen she stated that her date of birth was 7th November 1900.  On 23rd July 1952, William, Bridget and their children Mary C. (13), Patrick (12) and Nora (10) left New York and traveled to Ireland, they stated that their visit would last 10 weeks. They were on the passenger list leaving Cobh on 3rd October 1952 and arrived back into New York on 14th October 1952 on the Georgic, they were living in 3rd Avenue, Brintwood, New York and they had US passports at this time.

In 1930, James was living in Warturton Avenue in Yonkers with the Duffy Family, which comprised of Peter, Bridget and their children Laurence (2) and Mary (1). Also living with the family were Peter’s brother Thomas Duffy and Hugh Marron. These names are all local to the Shercock area. James was single and working as a Motorman for the Railroad. James could not be found on the 1940 US Census, this was because he had returned to Ireland, bought a farm in Carrickacreeney, Shercock, Co. Cavan and married Eileen Roe (1918-2014), they had five children. James died on 19th October 1990 and in 2016, his great grandson Eoghan James Ruxton was born in Carrickacreeney, Shercock.
