Born in Killycopple, Armagh, District of Markethill, to Thomas Brown Steele and Esther "Essie" Dickson Steele. Emigrated to America in 1890, living first in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area, where she worked as a dressmaker and tailor. She was living in Pittsburgh in the 1900 census, with her mother and older brother (Charles D. Steele).
Sarah married John Ross Lynden (1871-1956) in San Francisco on 21 Jan 1904 by Rev. Dr. John A. W. Wilson, Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church. They had three children: John Ross II (b. 1908), Esther (b. 1909), Richard (b. 1910). In 1932 she and her husband returned to Ireland for a lengthy visit, bringing their children (and Esther's husband, Rev. Joyce Wesley Farr), and visited many of their relatives from both sides of the family.
Sarah began to suffer symptoms of Parkinson's disease shortly after that trip. John tended her faithfully for the remainder of her life. She died in beautiful Saratoga, California, in 1950, and is remembered for her gentle manner and sense of humor.
