The conference will discuss how the historic urban characters of many of our main streets are losing vitality and value through under-use or over-development.
“One third of Irish people live in towns but over the years they have suffered from a policy vacuum, poor planning and external pressures. On Thursday 5 November, the Heritage Council will host a conference, ‘The Future of Irish Towns – Heritage, Community and Economic Development’, to coincide with the launch of their ‘Policy Proposals for Ireland’s Towns’.
It will look at how the social and economic factors which drive towns need to be better understood in order to manage the process of change and maximize the town's value.
The history of our governance and planning is one where thematic policy has been trumped by the electoral cycle. In that context towns have slowly become a ‘hidden-Ireland’ in policy terms. Individual towns, lacking the heft of numbers, have not had the policy or political pull cities or rural areas to advance an agenda or command attention.
On 5 November, the Heritage Council will bring together a wide ranging and thought provoking group of speakers to agree a policy agenda to advocate for the economic future of Ireland’s towns. The conference will be of particular relevance to policy decision-makers working in community, regional and rural development, in addition to planners and architects.
