Migrated to/Born in USA

Alexender M. McCallen was born on March 5, 1871, in Antrim, Northern Ireland.  His father, Charles, was 25 and his mother, Isabelle, was 23. At the age of 18 or 19, he immigrated to the USA  He settled in New Castle, Pennsylvania where he would remain the remainder of his life.  A number of McCallen/McCallion/McCallan families settled in this region and it would not be surprising if these existing families assisted him in his move, though there is no direct evidence of this happening.

He married Nettie Jane Black of New Castle, Pennsylvania on April 5, 1899, in Lawrence County Pennsylvania. Initially, they lived with Nettie's family until eventually finding there own home in New Castle.  They had no children.

Alexander worked in the local steel mills until his retirment.  At that time, he took up odd jobs including being the custodian at the county courthouse.

He died on October 28, 1943, in New Castle, Pennsylvania, at the age of 72, and was buried there.

  • My 2x great grandmother was Mary or Margaret McAllam (several spellings) who married Charles O'Donnell in 1833 in County Antrim, Racavan Parish.  Charles and Mary/Margaret remained in Antrim, but their 2 sons, Bernard and Charles, settled in Mercer County, PA.  Any connection, do you think?

  • I would presume that Bernard and Charles had the last name O'Donnell.  This name does not show up in any of my heirarchies, so I don't see any immediate relationships.  While it is clear that Alexander McCallen immigrated to the USA.  I've found no evidence that his father (Charles McCallen) or mother Isabelle came to the USA.

I'll do a bit more searching but no immediate connection is apparent.

  • You're right -- Charles O'Donnell was my great grandfather.  Since other cousins (McKay) were with them in PA, I was wondering if some of their McCallen cousins may have been there, too.  If my Mary/Margaret McAllam/McCallen fits into your tree somewhere, who knows?  They seemed to travel together.  i will check on the New Mexico land grants to see if any McCallens took part in that along with the O'Donnells.  I'll also check on PA censuses to see if they may have been in the same areas in PA.  Guess we  have to jump on any leads which come up.
