  • Welcome to IrelandXO Roscrea. There's a burial record here in Roscrea in the Church of Ireland Graveyard of a family of Brierley.  The record refers to one Mary A. who erected a memorial to her husband and also put her father, mother and sister - all Brierleys on the headstone.  Could they be related to your ancestor?

  • Hi Dick My ancestor Ann  was born in Roscrea in 1834 .and died in Hertfordshire England in 1909. Her father Henry was born in Roscrea in about 1803 and died in New Zealand in 1890. There were other Brierlys there about that time. Henry and his family went first to Liverpool  then to New Zealand. If you google Sergeant Henry Brierly   you will find information about him.  When did Mary Ann live?  Rita

  • Rita,

Apologies for not getting back to you sooner!  I'm not fully sure of when Mary Brierley lived -  the gravestone states inscription is as follows:

"Erected by Mary A Sheehan (Nee Brierley) Rosemary in Memory of Her Husband Thomas Sheehan died 18th Dec 1928 also Her Father Srimption Brierley and Her Mother Dora Her Brother John and Sister Mary R.I.P."

There's no mention of Mary herself having died and being buried on the gravestone, but it's possible she lies there too.

  • Hi Dick

Scrimpton ( 1819-1894 )was the brother of my ancestor Sergeant Henry Brierly.(in Google)      Scrimpton's  son was also Henry 1846-1911.   I have this info from another person's page that has got stuck on my family tree.   so I looked info up there. So this Henry (of Roscrea) married Charlotte Cook 1847-1896.   Mary Ann Brierly  born 18.1.1867.was their daughter. Parsonstown is mentioned.  This is nor my research . Scrimpton is buried in Roscrea 1894 and this is the tombstone.    My research is  Sergeant Henry Brierly. and others of his descendants emigrated to New Zealand    The ancestors further back are soldiers. At the Crinkill Barracks  Roscrea..Their records are at the Royal Chelsea Hospital  and they go back several generations  serving   all over the world..  Even going back to fighting between the new U S and Canada    I hope this helps   Rita .

  • Rita,

I live in New Zealand and "my" Brierly ancestors, descend from John Brierly and Susanna Pyne, who married in Kilrush Count Clare in 1827. Their son John came to New Zealand( he is my grt-grandfather). Two of his sisters Mary Anne (Kearney) and Margaret Ellen (Freney) also came to New Zealand. I have been unable to prove any connection with Sergeant Henry Brierly, but have always wondered why my grt-grandfather came here. Do you have any info that links these 2 families?

    Regards,

    Sherryn (nee Brierly)

  • Hi Sherryn

I will look into this tomorrow.  My family tree for Brierlys starts with Ann,  SGT Henry  Brierly's daughter.   When I found that He and my Gt grandfather John Holland were in the same regiment in Roscrea.   Then i found their army records and the countries they were in.  then found other Brierlys too. For instance I found three Brierlys an the Battle of Waterll medal

list.     It is a bit late for me  so i will look at where I have them connected...It seems like for several generations Brierlys were professional soldiers.     best wishes Rita  .

  • Sorry I wrote out my findings today . If you look at earlier correspondence here to Dick.... I wonder if this is a connection.. The ancestor was Scrimpton. His son was Henry , His daughter was Mary Ann .    Henry  emigrated to New Zealand  as you will see what dick says about it.   This is the only record I have.   Scrimpton was Sergeant henry Brierly's brother.  I hope this helps. I only do this as a hobby.   Read through Dick's letters. Let me know how you get on.

    Happy Christmas

  • Rita & Dick,

John Brierly & Susanna Pyne named their first son Henry as did your ancestor Scrimpton Brierly. What was the name of the first son of Henry Brierly and Charlotte Cook? If he is also named Henry this might suggest a common father named Henry for John, Scrimpton and Henry.Have either of you got any information going back that far? I see many Catholic birth/marriage registers online, but not many Church of Ireland records. Have either of you found any of these for County Clare? (Free preferably).

    Regards
