  • Hello, I am interested in the names as I have DNA matches to them and the area of Leitrim also.

John Lawrence married  Ellen Bolton in Dublin in 1861, he was a widower and she was the daughter of a revenue officier, her fathers name was William Bolton and his was Richard Lawrence, there are 4 children to this marriage registered in Leitrim, Susan Mary 1864; James Bolton 1866; Anne Elizabeth 1868 and Ismal Robert in 1871.

His first marriage to Elizabeth Heaney was in Mohill in 1859, they had one child baptised in May, 1860, William Richard, she died age 27 and was buried on the 11th April, 1860, assume the baptism was delayed and she died in childbirth, this was not unusual for ladies who grew up through the famine years.

The family were Church of Ireland.

  • Hi Leanne, I see there is also a Lawrence married a Crowe in Mohill around this time and this name also occurs in my DNA matches, on the Dublin marriage for John his address is given as Lough Rynn, I have a lot of family from this area and nearby, also saw a post which I cannot find on this line where the Lawrence family moved to Clare which from some of my matches makes sense.

There is a site here on Leitrim https://www.yourleitrimancestors.ie/index.htm and you can read about Lough Rynn here https://www.loughrynn.net/

There is also a Leitrim History and Genealogy Facebook page if you apply join.

There are 4 entries for Richard Lawrence in Griffiths Valuation, he is a tenant of Crofton (local big wig) and also one entry where he is a landord, this is circa 1854, there are maps to show where the plots are and you can view if free on the Ask About Ireland website.

My DNA matches are earlier than your timeframe if I am correct at the level of match.

    Regards

    Pat
