Margaret J. Knox is my GGG grandmother. She was living in Brown Township,
Carroll County, Ohio in 1850 with her husband Matthew Carson and their
5 children. Magaret J. Knox later moved to Indiana, probably because she and her sister, Mary Knox were awarded their brother, Matthew Knox's military land warrant of 160 acres of land in Indiana for serving in the Mexican American war. He was discharged in 1848 and died sometime before 1852 when his sisters were awarded that land warrant.

Do you feel that Margaret J. and Anne could be sisters?

  • Hi Dean, thanks for posting! That could be. I know Anne had sisters Margaret, Mary and a Jane. Their parents were a John Knox and Martha Herron, Co. Donegal, married? 1795. James McClure and his wife Anne Knox (my GG grandmother) moved to Indiana near Princeton in the late 1850's and I have some data to indicate they lived there on 130 acres of "bottom land" along the Patoka River about a mile west of Princeton.  It could be on the land you mentioned. However, I don't have a brother Matthew listed as a sibling so am not sure it is the same family. Interesting though as I have a James McClure arriving at Philadelphia on the ship Carouge May 10, 1839 from Londonderry. In The Kirk and Lands of Convoy Since the Scottish Settlement, by T.H. Mullin, Belfast News-Letter Ltd., 1960, (Appendix I, A list of the families belonging to Convoy Presbyterian congregation taken March 1822, by the Rev. John Wray, when first visiting), p.190 is listed my family at Craigs as: Mr. and Mrs. Knox. Children: Eliza, Mary, Matty, Jane, Ann, John, Joseph. No mention of a Matthew there. Do you know when he was born? Perhaps after 1822? Or when he came to America? He would have been old enough to serve in the Mexican War if born after 1822. For Anne's siblings I have: John...went to USA in 1850 with sister Martha, was in civil war, never married. Martha (Matty) married Sam Blackburn, lived in Madison Co. IL. Joseph, married Jane Sherland...stayed in Ireland, the only one of his siblings not to emigrate. Jane, married Nathaniel Henderson, lived at Littleton, Aroostook, Maine, USA. Elizabeth married John McKinney, lived in Mosquito Twp., Christian Co., IL. Esther married John Donnell, went to Australia (Seymour, Victoria). Rebecca, the youngest b. 1834,  married David Cullen, went to Australia (Seymour, Victoria). Can communicate further by email if you wish. Thanks for posting your information. Dennis

  • I have not been absolutely sure that the women on the ship were my ancestors but the names sure matched. So then I researched Convoy and found that there was a Knox family there.

Mattew Knox was living in Brown Township, Carroll County, Ohio in the 1840 census. It stated that there was one male and one female living there.. He enlisted at Cleveland Ohio in 1847 and was 29 years old, thus he would have been born ~~1818. His sister Margaret J. married Matthew Carson and sister Mary A. married  Joseph McFarland. Both were living in Ohio also. If he had a wife she must have died (maybe that is why he went into the military)., because on the military land warrant in 1852 it listed Matthew as deceased, his sisters got the land in Indiana and no mention of a wife. The land was in Lake County, Indiana.

Additional info fom another source states that Mary A. was born in county Tyrone. I have never proved that:

The Joseph McFarland family and the Matthew Carson family lived close to each other in Porter County , Indiana in the 1870 time frame.

Joseph’s wife Mary A. Know was born in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland on 15 Jul 1815 and Matthew’s wife Margaret Jane was born there on 16 Jan 1817.  Hannah Carson, daughter of Matthew and Margaret Jane calls Mary McFarland her aunt in her Pioneer Reminiscences below.

Notice also that Patrick McFarland (1773-1841) married an Elizabeth Knox in Ireland.  He is the father of Joseph and Patrick McFarland who both lived around the Hebron, Indiana around the late 1800’s.  I think there was also an Amour McFarland that was the son of Joseph living in that area as well.

  • In the 1860 census, my family is listed as:

The 1860 U.S. census for Gibson co., Patoka twp. Indiana recorded on July 16, 1860 shows the following:

Head of household James McClure, male, 50, farmer, born in Ireland
         Ann, female, 40, Ire
         Francis, male, 12, b. Pa
         William J., male,10, b. Pa
         Richard, male, 8, b. Pa
         Mary E, female, 5, b. Pa
         Martha Ann, female,2, b. Indiana
Rebecca Jane, female, 2 mo., b. Indiana Enumeration was to June 1, 1860

Sounds like a different family than yours. I did find a listing for a Mathew Knox at FindAGrave for Mound Cemetery, Marietta, Washington Co., Ohio. Born 1820, died 1852. An Ancestry.com search gave this as the only likely fit for those years.

  • I had my hopes up when I found the Mound Cemetery listing but it turned out to be an incorrect listing. I had the history researcher at the library help me research this and he said that he was not buried there. We have never found out where he died or anything. He was discharged from the military. Thanks for the reply.

  • You're welcome, and thanks for sharing. Have you tried searching NARA military records for Matthew? I don't know if they have records there on the Mexican War. I found a whole  lot of records on my civil war ancestor there.

  • On FamilySearch.org there is a Mathew Knox listed there for the Mexican War, enlisted from 1846-48, as Pvt. in the 2 Ohio Inf. Col. Irvin, Unit L. Maybe that was him. There may be more records on him at NARA. Maybe you have already checked that. Dennis

  • Yes, that is him.  My cousin found that record awhile back.. Many people migrated when the government opened up more land to sell. My GG grandfather left Philadelphia in 1855 to go to Indiana to buy farm land. Your James McClure might have done the same thing..

  • Yes, I think that may be what James and Ann did. James was listed as a farmer. As for the NARA records, there is a form you can submit with your ancestor's regiment data along with your relationship to him and send it in to Washington. They will do a search and if there are other records there, they will let you know. For my ancestor there was a whole lot of information and documentation...army records, places he lived, pensions, death records, funeral data, correspondence with relatives, etc. It was a real treasure to receive that stuff!
