Anne Shorten was born on 6 Nov 1812 in Bandon, County Cork and baptized the next day in Christ Church, Parish of Kilbrogen. Her parents were Stephen and Elizabeth Shorten and her mother’s maiden name was probably Sealy. Anne was one of 11 children. See more about them under Stephen Shorten. Anne’s father and probably her mother remained in Ireland while Anne, her brother Richard emigrated to Canada, her brother Stephen became a soldier in the East India Company's Artillery and died in Karachi, India (now Pakistan) and her brother William emigrated to England.
Anne seems to have been the first in the family to emigrate, and as she was 18 or younger, perhaps she was a mother’s assistant. She must have met her husband Thomas Humble in Quebec. He was a shipwright but a lot older than Anne having been born on 3 Oct 1769 and married twice before. Anne and Thomas were wed 3 Sep 1831 in the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity (Church of England), Quebec City, Quebec. He was almost 62 years old and Anne 18.
Anne and Thomas had 4 children in Canada before relocating to Buffalo, New York in about 1851. Their daughter died as a child in Quebec but Thomas taught his 3 sons the skills of a shipwright. Thomas died 22 August 1856, aged 86 and Anne less than a year later on 16 May 1857, aged 44.
