Back to List

Bernard O'Connor possibly had another first name of Gerald and was sometimes known as 'Gerry'.

He married Mary Harnett of Abbeyfeale in Newcastle, Limerick on 17/02/1876. They had two children born in Ireland while living at a place near Abbeyfeale called 'Garravane' - firstborn Michael, born 14/01/1877 then Johanna, born 08/04/1878.

Sometime within the next couple of years they emigrated to New Zealand where they settled in Fairlie, South Canterbury and had 4 more children.

The first of these was Timothy O'Connor, my grandfather born 16th Oct 1882 in Fairlie, NZ.  He fought throughout WW1 with the NZ Expeditionary Forces and was wounded twice - firstly in Gallipoli on 8th August 1915 during the battle for Chanuk Bair and again during the Battle of the Somme. He married his English war bride and returned to NZ where he ran his own sheep farm and they had 3 children. Their youngest was Brian Francis O'Connor, my father.

I would like any information about Bernard O'Connor and Mary Harnett; their parents, grandparents, siblings and their descendants etc.
