Bridget Hay was born around June 1844 in Drumcliff Parish, County Sligo.  She was baptised 2nd July 1844. 

Her parents were Patrick Hay (Abt. 1800-) and Mary Judge (Abt. 1811-).  Her father Patrick was a coal miner and flax mill worker.

She had an older sister Mary Hay (1829-) and an older brother Edward Hay (1834-).

She emmigrated with her parents to Lanarkshire in Scotland, first appearing on the 1851 census in Old Monkland, Lanarkshire.

When Bridget was 20 she married David McSpurren (1834-) who was also born in Drumcliff, Sligo.  She had 7 children with David: John (1866-1923), Edward(1867-), Bridget (1869-1943), James (1871-1897), David (1871-1960), Bernard (1873-1875) and Sarah (1875-1911).

In 1876 Bridget married another Irishman, Robert Whitelaw (Abt. 1839-)

Her husband David also worked as a miner and died in 1875 at the age of 41.

Bridget died from pneumonia in Blantyre, Lanarkshire, Scotland on 7th February 1918, age 72 years.

Spelling of her maiden name varied between Hay, Hoy, Howie and Hoie on various records
