Bridget Madigan (1831-1867)

Bridget Madigan (b1831) was the daughter of Thomas Madigan (1799-1883?) and Bridget (nee Fitzgerald) of Rathkeale, Limerick.

In Loghill, Limerick on 26 July 1856, Bridget married James Boardman.

James Boardman was born c1820.   He served in the Royal Irish Constabulary between 1844-1868 in Limerick and later Cork and is recorded as a Native of Londonderry.

Their children were Mary Jane (b. 1858-1944), Bridget (b. 1859), Thomas Robert (b. 1862-1939), Harriet Allice (b. 1864) and Matilda Ann (b. 1865-1945) all born in Cork.

Bridget died 2 January 1867 ( her death registered in the District of Ballincollig, Cork) and her husband James Boardman died 24 January 1870 in Mallow, Cork leaving a young family to be brought up by relatives.

Mary Jane, Thomas Robert and Matilda Ann later separately emmigrated to New Zealand and Harriet Allice to Pennysylvania, USA.

Can anyone add to my knowledge of my Irish ancestors?

  • I have been looking for information on my Great GG Grandfather Daniel Madigan (born 1790 to 1800) also from the Rathkeale area (I think).  His son Thomas Madigan (1828-1916) emigrated to Canada.  I wonder if Bridgets father Thomas (1799-1883)  might be Daniel's brother or cousin??     Katherine (maiden name) Madigan.

  • I am sorry that I can not help you with your querry about a family connection of Daniel Madigan and Thomas Madigan.
From an entry in the  Loughill Parish Marriage Register, I learned that  Thomas Madigan (farmer) was the father of Bridget Madigan (1831-1867) .  She married James Boardman in the parish of Loughill, Rathkeale District,  Limerick 26 July 1856.
Bridget had a sister Ann (c1834-1901) who emmigrated and married in New Zealand.  I am not aware of other siblings.
At this stage, I am yet to prove  that the Thomas Madigan (1799-1867) listed in Ireland Valuation 1847-1864 as the occupier of a house in Rathkeale  owned by the Rev. Doctor Walsh is the father of my ancestor Bridget Madigan.
I have also found another Thomas Madigan (1803-1873) living in Rathkeale.

If this in any way helps you with your research, I would be pleased to know as it may confirm or disprove my family tree.
