Bryan Bernard Hayes is my great Grandfather who I think was born in Limerick in January 1847. The date is of some conjecture.* He travelled from Liverpool, England on the Star of India to Australia and on the passenger list Bryan is listed as an 11 year old boy along with his 3 brothers (Cornelius, Michael & John) and 2 of his sisters (Anne & Mary) arriving in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia on 30 July,1863. Bryan's father was William Hayes born in Limerick on 14 April, 1811 and died in 1876 and his mother was Alicia Hanley who was born in Tipperary in 1812 and died in 1878. * I have a Church Baptism Record for Brian Hayes with the parents being listed as William Hayes & Allicia Hanley and the Date of Birth/Baptism being written as 22 January 1847. The Parish is written as Hospital & Herbertstown in County Limerick. I have also a Parish record from Ireland, Catholic Parish Registers 1655 - 1915 that has a Brien (different spellng) Hayes as being born in January 1847 and the Baptism being at Limerick Hospital on 22 January 1847 with his mother's name written as Ally Hanley from Oldtown in the Diocese of Cashel & Emly. However when Bryan travelled to Australia in 1863 his name on the passenger list of the ship in which he sailed, The Star of India, is written as Bryan and he is listed as 11 years old. Further when Bryan died in Australia in December 1930, his death certificate states that the speling of his name is Bryan and that he was 79 years old at the time of his death which, if that is correct, would mean that Bryan was actually born in 1851. Bryan married Annie Frances Fitzgerald (born 1853 or 1854 in Limerick) in Nagambie, Victoria, Australia in 1878. Bryan met and married his future wife Annie in Australia, not in Ireland. They had 8 children in Australia - William, John, Alice, Mary, Margaret, Annie (my Grandmother), Ellen, Helen & William. Bryan died in Violet Town, Victoria, Australia on 18 December, 1930 and Annie pre-deceased him on 30 October, 1930.
