I have a handwritten note that my wife's 3x Great Grandmother,Catherine Holmes, carried with her when she emigrated from Ireland to Canada. She ended up in the area of Belleville, Hastings, Ontario, Canada. The note is dated April 24th 1820 and signed by James Thompson. Catherine Holmes was a member of the "congregation of Drum". Beautiful handwriting. This note was passed down through the generations and I could not believe it when my mother in law showed it to me.
Subsequent census records and documents in Canada places Catherine Holmes' date of birth between 1791 and 1795. I have no record of her parents or any other information of her Irish past besides this wonderful note. In Canada she married a man named John Baker who was born in England.
I found a reference to James Thompson in a "The Evangelical Guardian and Review, Volume 2" book from 1819.
We are travelling to Ireland and plan to visit Drum. It will be 200 years and this note will be back in Drum.
