Catherine was born in Castlebar in 1832 along with her brother Michael born 1831, she was sentenced to 7 years prison for stealing  3 sheep.

Michael died in( Richmond) Bridewell prison  before  he could be transported.

Catherine was transported to Tasmania in 1849, on the ship Australasia. She married a John Smith also a convict from Lavenham England.

They had 9 children and lived in Longford Tasmania .

Catherine died in 1925 in Longford at age 93, she is buried at St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Graveyard.

I have had no luck finding info about her life before she commited her crime with her brother.

She is written about in A book "A Drift of Derwent Ducks" by Trudy Cowley

  • What an interesting story, and how fortunate you are to have found those details about Catherine and her brother!  My great-grandmother, Anna Forde, was born in Castlebar just two weeks before your Catherine, in 1832......I wonder if they knew each other?  Thank you for sharing this!

  • I have a 3x great grandmother Anne Keane b. 1781 who married a Michael Timlin. I don't know where she was born but she died in 1865 in Castleconnor, Sligo. Possibly a relation?
