Catherine Kennedy was born at Cloniniha Terryglass Tipperary on 2nd Feb 1835 the second eldest of seven children born to john Kennedy and Margaret Hough.
In 1847 at the height of the potato famine the entire family set off for Liverpool where they boarded the Sir Robert Peel bound for Quebec on the 26th July 1847.
Her youngest brother Patrick barely one year old died on the voyage and was buried at sea
The ship was quarantined at Grosse Ile in the St Lawrence River where further tragedy struck, by late October both parents John and Margaret and three of their children also died of fever leaving three orphans Catherine, Sylvester and John.
Catherine was adopted by Clovis Caron of French origin and lived with the family at St Simone Rimouski Quebec.
She married Louis Leon Caron a nephew of Clovis Caron they had eleven children with seven surviving to adulthood.
Catherine died at St Sophia du Halifax Quebec in 1876 age just 41 leaving a lineage which we have managed to trace to Rhode Island New York.
In 1998 Nenagh playwright Jim Minogue wrote a very successful play “Flight to Grosse Ile” based on the life story of Catherine Kennedy of Terryglass.
