Catherine McManus, born c. 1828 in Mohill :census returns. Married c. 1846 :first child  bap. June 1847, Mohill, Leitrim. Husband James HADFIELD, soldier in 41st Foot.

Children in order of birth: James, Jane, Ann, John, Mary, William, Joseph, Catherine. James Hadfields mother was called Ann, his father James. I have no idea of Catherine's parent's names, although she possibly had a brother called James, who was a godfather to her edest son. The other children were baptised as they moved around Ireland and then England.

  • The lack of documentation is frustrating, isn't it? I have a John McManus (1795-1870) on my tree who is the right age to be your Catherine's father, and his father was James, which probably means that if he had a son the son would have been named James. John married Isabella Chartiers (1800-1883). They were COI. Do you know if your McManus branch was COI or RC?

  • Hello Diane,

Sorry it's taken a while to respond, I've only just found your message. It is very frustrating, because although I have now found the marriage and have the certificate, it doesn't give the father's names so I can't get any further back. My McManus's were RC. Where did yours live? do you have any other information? Perhaps your lot are linked to the Police Sergeant Pat O Halloran noted who put out the fire in Lord Leitrim's place?

    Best wishes

  • My McManus's seem to have all been COI, but were definitely in the general area. The man I have thrown out as a possible father for your Catherine was born in County Cavan and had one child born in Cavan and one in Longford. My grandfather's family seem to have been generally in the Leitrim/Cavan/Longford/Roscommon neck of the woods for at least a couple of centuries.

  • There certainly are a lot of McManus in the Roscommon/Cavan/ Longford area so it's possible mine originated there. All I have to go on is that in the census returns she always says she comes from Mohill, but whether that's the town or parish I don't know. I suspect Catherine's father might have been called John, purely from the names of their children. But of course he could also have been called James!

Have you taken a DNA test? I have, and have discovered I match a number of people in USA descended from a John McManus born 1856 in Albany, New York, who I think must be Catherine's nephew. His father, who would be Catherine's brother of course, seems to be James (found in Albany in 1850 as James Maniss ) which all fits. But the descendants don't have any idea where in Ireland their McManus's originated (but they are RC). If you have taken a test, it would be interesting to see if we match.

There is a John McManus in Griffith's Valuation of 1856 in Mohill town. He dies in 1873 aged about 65, and could well be Catherine's father - but no definite links unfortunately, so it's all hypothetical!

  • Yes, I've taken a DNA test and so have two of my sisters. Could you drop me a note at dianefarr@aol.com? I'd be happy to share my GedMatch kit number with you. You never know!
