Charles Joseph Cosgrove was born around 1857 the youngest son of his farming father Patrick and mother Anne who was born a Crossan, in Aughawillan, Carrigallen, County Letrim .  He had three older brothers John, Micheal and Bernard and sisters Margaret who was older and Anne who was the youngest of the family. In 1876 he moved to Belfast to join the Royal Irish Constabulary on 31st October, he had been a labourer prior to this. 

Charles moved to County Fermanagh on April , 1879 where he later meet his wife Margaret Maguire. Charles and Margaret were married at the Roman Catholic Chapel at Enniskillen on November 7, 1887. The RIC had a policy that you could not serve in a location where there was family so Charles was then transferred prior to the wedding on October 1, 1887 to County Down as a constable.

Charles and Margaret's first son William Patrick Cosgrove was born on March 6, 1889 and they were living in Downshire Road, Holywood which is where they were living when all their children were born. The second son Charles Joseph Cosgrove was born on March 14, 1890. Their first daughter Annie Cosgrove was born on Octeber 8, 1892.

Charles' mother Anne died on March 28, 1893 back at Aughawillan, Carrigallen, County Letrim.

On May 1, 1893 Charles was promoted to Acting Sergeant with the RIC.

Charles' third son Michael John Cosgrove was born January 6, 1895.

Charles was promoted to Sergeant on September 1, 1895.

Charles and Margaret's last child Mary Theresa Cosgrove was born on January 11, 1896.  

Charles' wife Margaret died on November 19, 1901 from Scirrho-contracted Rectum a very unpleasant way to die.

Charles remarried on April 13, 1904 to Mary Josephine O'Hare in St Bridgets Roman Catholic Church Belfast County Antrim.  Mary was not recorded in the 1911 Census with Charles at Cregagh Town, Castlereagh, County Down and it is unknown at this point what might have happened to her.

Charles father died December 9, 1906 back at the farm in Aughawillan, Carrigallen, County Letrim. 

Charles left the RIC on May 1, 1912 and lived on the pension he received at his home in Cregagh Town, Castlereagh, County Down until he died in 1932.
