  • Hi Colin,

    Thank you for your enquiry.

Civil birth records only commenced in ireland in 1864. 1820 births require church baptism records. Are you looking for catholics ? The catholic parish for the Virginia area, Co Cavan is called Lurgan in the Diocese of Kilmore. Unfortunately, there is a gap in Lurgan church baptism records from Aug 1795 to Nov 1821 . https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0849. This link is free but not indexed. Church records are indexed on www.ancestry.com, www.findmypast.ie and www.rootsireland.ie. Either ancestry or FMP indices might be free but I prefer Roots ireland for its search function and it was transcribed locally by the cavan genealogy office. They have daily, montly and annual subscription. There is no Julia Muldoon baptism in surviving Lurgan parish records on Roots Ireland. Do you have parents or siblings names from julia's marriage or death cert in NSW?

The address given on most Muldoon baptisms in Lurgan records is Killacunny (Killyconny) and Fartagh. This area is in the very southern end of the parish . Their nearest church would be Maghera church , one of the 3 churches in the parish. Off the top of my head, Maghera graveyard near it, opened in the 1950s . Muldoons are buried in it. It replaced an older graveyard called Derver just up the road but situated in the neighbouring parish of Carnaross, Co Meath. Some transcriptions are on http://www.interment.net/ireland/cavan.htm for these graveyards. Derver is very old, but has few markers with inscriptions on them. Raffony graveyard is also in Lurgan parish. St Killans and Tempeall Cheallaigh are in the neighbours parish of Mullagh, Co Cavan about 5km from Fartagh. Look through the other graveyards on this Co Cavan link. Marybe www.irishgraveyards.ie might have more info.

I'd have to make a few phone calls to confirm, but I think there are still Muldoons in this area today.

The 1821 census for Virginia survived. http://www.genealogy.nationalarchives.ie/ . It is stored under Co Cavan, Lurgan parish and then townlands , (Irelands smallest form of postal address , especially in rural Ireland) . There is no Julia Muldoon or any Muldoon children on it in Lurgan. I think the census was taken on or about 31st March 1821 . The 1901 and 1911 census list Muldoons in this area. Its stored under , Co Cavan, DED Virginia, then townlands for those two later census. The next census wass taken in 1926. It is not made public yet. Census returns from 1831 to 1891 have not survived or were destroyed by government order.

Newspaper records are on www.irishnewsarchives.com and the british newspaper archives website, both subscription websites. If you have a find my past subscription, it will accesses BNA . The regional papers are the Anglo Celt archived from 1845 and maybe the Meath Chronicle archived from 1896 might carry some stories from Maghera and Virginia areas. There are a number of national newspaper on these archives also.

If you are on facebook book, try the private group IGP's Co Cavan Ireland genealogy.
