Cornelius Ryan (Ryan-Laurence / Carhue House) 1812

Back to List

Cornelius Ryan was born c.1812 in Carhue, Anacarthy. He had at least one son, John b. circa1847. John Ryan married Margaret Hurley of Glenough where they set up their family home; among their 10 children was my great grandmother and John's eldest child Mary Ryan-Hurley. Cornelius died on 15 November 1888 in Carhue having lived a long life of 76 years. Aside from this I know my grandmother used to visit her cousins in Carhue House and these were known as the Ryan-Laurences. If anyone is connected to this Cornelius Ryan or the Ryan-Laurences and/or has any further information I'd really appreciate your assistance.

Additional Information
Date of Birth 1st Jan 1812 (circa)
Date of Death 15th Nov 1888

  • Hi Fiona,

I know you have replied to my own post from a few years ago, but I have just found this post of yours after someone else replied to my post today, and feel like they are connected to you with Cornelius.

My great, great grandfather was named Laurence Ryan and they migrated to South Australia in 1876 where they had their last child - my great grandmother named Emma Ryan (but had several other children in Ireland before leaving) .

When I visted Ireland in 2019 I was taken to Carhue House by a local who was renting it from a Ryan who owned it but lived in Dublin at the time, and I spoke to him on the phone while I was there who said his father or grandfather was named Laurence. His name was Neil Ryan. I have pictures of Carhue House if you would like them??

I do believe that Cornelius and my great, great, great grandfather were brothers and have a theory that his name may be John, who then had my great, great grandfather named Laurence.  Do you have any info to confirm that Cornelius had a brother named John?

I really feel like we are connected with these Ryan's in this tiny townland of Carhue, so hoping we can connect our info somehow!

    Crossing everything,
    Rachael in Adelaide, South Australia

  • Hi Rachael,

Thanks for getting in touch. I haven't been on this site in a while and I ended up being locked out of my original account but I've created a new one now.

Yes, you're right, Noel Ryan in Dublin inherited Carhue House and he is a realitive of ours, we lost contact details so I've had no way of getting in touch with him in Dublin. I personally never met Noel but I remember meeting his sister Mary (RIP) with my grandmother when I was little; my Dad and uncle would have known them all when they were growing up.

I've had a look at the new message on your posting and you're correct Cornelius Ryan and Mary Carroll were my GGG grandparents so this lady must definetly be related to us!

My connection with Carhue House is a little complicated because I've been told by my grandmothers 1st cousin that there may have been a double connection to the Ryans in Carhue House, so we would have been related to both of Noel's parents, Molly and John, but as she was much younger than her cousins her knowledge of exactly how everyone is connected is a bit sketchy; however, like my grandmother, she too remembers her lovely visits to Carhue as a child fondly.

I too believe that we are all connected somehow as there seems to be quite a few similarities in naming patterns. I have snippets of information, some of which links to family in the US, and if I'm honest what I have is a bit all over the place but I'm more than happy to correspond with you in the hope that we might be able to figure it all out. My email for further correspondance is fiona007taylor@hotmail.com.

    Take care,
    Fiona T.

  • Hi Fiona

I had contact details for Noel (not 'Neil' as I called him in my message, sorry!) from when I spoke to him when I was there in Ireland, and have been desperately searching my notes so I can give them to you, but I cannot for the life of me find them now :(  He told me that his niece had done quite a bit of family research so was hoping to follow up with him when I got home to see if I could get hold of any of that info.

I still haven't been able to connect my GG grandfather Laurence to you or Julie's branch, but I still can't shake the feeling he was the son of a Cornelius brother. I would love any of your scattered snippets if you are happy to share, particularly if you have any sibling info for Cornelius :D

My email is rach.howse@gmail.com if you'd like to message me there :)

Hopefully we can find our connection soon!

    Happy New Year,

    Rachael
