Correction: I inadvertantly said Bridget McMahan died in 1865 at 30 years of age. That would be a good trick since she was also born in 1865. She died in 1895 more below).

Born August 10, 1864 County Clare, Ireland, to Patrick Melican (b 1819), and Margaret Meehan Melican (b 1825). Unfortunately, there is a dearth of genealogical information for Daniel in Ireland. I have not been able to find a mention of him - no birth certificate, no baptismal certificate, nothing, though there is plenty for his younger brother Patrick (b 1866).

In approximately 1869 - 1872 Daniel emigrated with his family to Buffalo, New York. In Buffalo, he married Bridget McMahan (b 1865). They had four children: Maggie (b 1888), Daniel Raymond (b 1890 but died 1891), my grandfather, Leo Albert (b 1891), and Marcella Olivia (b 1893). Interestingly, Maggie and Daniel Raymond are shown in my records as Melican, but my grandfather and Marcie are shown as Milligan.

Unfortunately, Bridget died in January, 1895 at 30 years of age. My brother located the physician's notes, very detailed, from the night she died, abt 1:00 AM, of liver complications. This was a bit of a mystery to the physician because Bridget did not diank alcohol at all. No good deed goes unpunished.

Daniel was alone for a little more than two years before marrying Augusta Knopp on March 28, 1897. They had one child that I know of: shown in my genealogy as Margaret E. (I believe Ellen) Melegan.

Daniel died in 1918 in Buffalo, New York.

  • Hi Dorann,

I do. I had my autosomal DNA done by 23andme & Ancestry, and my Y-DNA done by Family Tree DNA. Where did you have yours done, and which type of test?

I just looked at the willcalendar.com picture of Noblett Molony's death register. Thank you for sharing that. And he was master of the Kidysart workhouse no less. That's very interesting about John Meehan.

So, he died in Kildysart, which is my ancestors' main stomping ground. My brother and I were there last summer. What an amazing trip. I got to stand in the original house that Margaret Meehan and Denis Melican lived in raising all their kids. Melicans still live there, and they built around it instead of knocking it down.

    Hope we find a connection.

  • Sorry Dorann, I got my Margarets mixed up. I shouldn't do this when it's late lol. Margaret Meehan was married to Patrick Melican, who was one of the sons of Denis Melican and Margaret Hogan. We got to stand in the house of Denis Melican and Margaret Hogan from Circa 1810s!

  • Hi Micheal Patrick Melican and Dorann

Micheal  - per my Family Tree DNA you and I are 2-4th cousins and I have been looking for how we are connected.

only connection I see so far  is in the Melican Family tree info at Ennis library  by Elizabeth Melican Odel  page 54 which says  John Melican had a daugther b 1853 Susan that married Micheal O'Dea in Buffalo, NY  - I am related to a Micheal O'Dea in Buffalo that fits the general time frame but he died at age 19 and that is all I know of him but have parent and sibling info.  Susan could have been with child but that does not explain how you would be a Melican vice an O'Dea so that connection is not likely

My O'Dea's are also from Kidysert to Buffalo. The James O'Dea Hardware store in Kildysert is still operted by a cousin

Do you have any O'Dea connection that you know of ?

and Doran -my Great Grad mother was Margreat McNamare from Kildysert area - married Patrick O'Dea from Kildysert here in Buffalo.  She had a sister who married a Molony in Kildyset.  I have seen the name Norbert Molony before and will have to look for how he is connected. Any way, Margret's sister died about mid1890's and margret returned to Kildysert and ended up bringing the 4 Moiony children back to Buffalo and raising them.
