Migrated to/Born in USA

Looking for information of place of birth in Ireland of a Daniel McCarthy who immigrated with wife, Mary Ann Moran to Jersey City, NJ, in 1859-60.  Daniel and Mary Ann were married at St. Peter's RC church (now defunct) on 28 Feb 1854. His father, as listed in his wedding registry in Liverpool, England, was a Timothy McCarthy, who as he was himself, as tinplate worker. All USA censuses call for Ireland as place of birth. Also listed as occupation for most of the NJ censuses was tinsmith. In several Jersey City directories, I have discovered, his address along with several other male family members is listed as 13 Storm Ave., and the article concerning his death is listed also as 13 Storm Ave, Jersey City. This concern is regarding a place of birth in Ireland for both Daniel and his father, Timothy.  I have discovered his children's name (with wife Mary Ann Moran) were a Mary (ann), John, Thomas, Daniel, Patrick, (which was mother Mary Ann Moran's fathers name), Johanna, and last born, Timothy.  I am descended from son Patrick.

I have truly hit a brick wall here and would love to visit Ireland soon but need this "homeland" information to make the trip meaningful.  I have other relatives from Ireland as well.  The woman who married Patrick McCarthy, son of daniel, was a Maria Gavin, daughter of a Pat Gavin and Honora Higgins, as listed on a wedding registry of Patrick McCarthy and Maria Gavin, wed in Jersey City, NJ, in 1891.  ("New Jersey Marriages, 1678-1985", , FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FZKD-SMF : 20 January 2020), Patrick Gavin in entry for Patrick McCarthy, 1891.) Patrick and Maria(Mary)'s children were a MaryAnn, John Joseph, Timothy j., and a Thomas McCarthy.   I know that the Gavins and Higgins families were from the Ballina area in County Mayo.  I do remember my Aunt, daughter or John Joseph McCarthy saying something about a Maria McCarthy coming from county Mayo when I was much younger.

I thought the naming of children might help somehow in who the original Timothy in this inquiry may have been married to.  I also thought the fact that both thisTimothy and his son were tin plate workers may help.  Naturally the time period in Ireland and in Liverpool england were during much unrest so perhaps they were relocated to Liverpool (address listed on Daniel/Mary Ann Moraan's wedding registry was Fortenoy Ave, Liverpool), before this 1854 time period.  I am remiss in my history and geographic knowledge of these places in Ireland and, in fact all of Great Britain, and for that I apologize.

If any one can help, i will say Thank you in advance!

The McCarthys were very likely from Co. Cork. However, there were many Daniel McCarthys with father Timothy. I found at least 25 with a quick search of a coupe data bases and we don't know if your Daniel was one of that group. Also, the occupation would not be helpful in searching baptismal records.

Better luck with Mary Gavan. On the subscription site Roots Ireland, there was a April 12 1863 baptismal record for a Mary Gavan with father Patrick Gavan and mother Honora Higgins. They were from Co. Mayo but not Ballina. The RC parish was Balla which is in central Mayo near Castlebar. Ballina is a good distance to the north .Looks like Honor has at least ten children. Pat and Honor married in Balla on July 1 1857.

I found a civil birth record for a younger sister Catherine in 1869. See eighth record https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1869/03380/2239022.pdf

The family was from Drumcorrabaum townland in Drum civil parish (at least in 1869). I think this is Honor in the 1901 census http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Mayo/Clogher/Drumcorrabaun/1582719/

  • Good morning, Ms. Cochran -

Unfortunately, I do not see any records in the US that record Daniel's place of birth specifically.  Just Ireland is stated.  There are a lot of guesses you can make, but you could be chasing down a neverending group of rabbit holes.

I see the same marriage record, but no other records in the UK.  Odd that he did not list his Mother's name.  Have you pulled the death certificate from New Jersey?  Possibly information from the funeral home or cemetery?  There is also the possibility of an obituary and probate papers.  You mention a story in the newspaper, are there other names listed?  Since you know the approximate date he entered the US, a Declaration of Intent might solve the problem.  His actual naturalization won't give a lot of information, but the Declaration of Intent does.  If you know the port, it might be found.  Most people filled out the Dec of Intent as soon as they landed in America.

The best clue you have is to follow his siblings.  Did they travel together to Liverpool then America?  Are they on the same ship?  I would do the same research on the siblings as you have done for Daniel.  One of his brothers possibly gave a place in Ireland.  Also, the siblings names and birthdates can be checked in Ireland to see if there is a commmonality between the siblings and a set of parents.  Not all records in Ireland have the same dates of record availability, so this could be problematic, but certainly worth a shot.

Last, but not least, has anyone done a DNA test.  Most DNA tests will give you an area of the Ireland to search.  My DNA shows Munster with an emphasis on Limerick and northern Cork.

Please let me know if you can provide the siblings names and dates of birth.  I'm happy to see what I can find.  The information is usually out there, you just have to keep looking.
