Daniel McCarty (McCarthy) was born in Ireland to Jeremiah McCarthy and Ellen Hurley circa 1850. Daniel's parents were married in Inchigeelagh, Cork in 1817, though there are no records for Daniel in this parish. Sometime in the 1860s or early 1870s, Daniel left Ireland for the United States.
On November 19, 1879, he married Mary Ellen Doherty. She was the daughter of James Doherty and Catherine "Kate" Lynch of Fall River, Massachusetts. The couple settled in New Bedford, MA, where Daniel worked as a Brick Mason. They welcomed six children beginning with the oldest George in 1880. He was followed by the others: Daniel, Edward, James, William, and Eleanor. Mary Ellen died soon after Eleanor's birth from complications with the delivery. Daniel died a few years later on April 25, 1899. His oldest son, George, was only 19 years old and had to raise his five younger siblings (including his five-year-old little sister). He went on to be very successful and became the head plumbing inspector for the city of New Bedford.
