Daniel "Danny" MONTAGUE, son of James and Sarah (McClary) Montague, was born on October 27, 1867, in County Wicklow, Ireland. When he was a toddler the family moved to England.
From a young age, Daniel showed a fondness for the sea and at the age of 11, he became a cabin boy. His first outward bond port was New York,
According to a New York Herald newspaper article of June 6, 1898, he reportedly escaped death two times in shipwrecks. At the age of 16, he was reportedly the only survivor on the steamship, "Polynesia" which traveled between Liverpool and New York.
Daniel married Margaret Corcoran in England about 1882 and they emigrated to the USA where they lived in Brooklyn, New York for a time. Later they moved to Pennsylvania. They had at least four daughters.
In 1899 Daniel Montague was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor "for his role in the sinking of the Merrimac" during the Spanish-American War.
Daniel died on February 4, 1912, and was buried at Annapolis Naval Cemetery in Annapolis, Maryland.
