David Joseph Spence was a native of County Waterford, Ireland (b. May 1825).  In 1848 he came to the Port of Philadelphia and settled in Pennsylvania.

 

Ellen Donahue was a native of County Cork, Ireland (b. March 10, 1827) who immigrated to Pennsylvania in November of 1845.  On July 1, 1849, Ellen Donahue married David J. Spence in Philadelphia.  They had three children while living in Pennsylvania: Hannah (b. 1849), Robert (b. 1853), and David (b. 1855).  In May 1856 the Spence family came to Le Sueur County and settled on a farm in Tyrone Township.  Over the next ten years, David and Ellen had 7 more children (John, Mary, Ellen, Martin, Thomas, James, and Agnes).

 

David J. Spence was 68 years old when he died in Le Sueur on September 29, 1893.  Ellen Donahue Spence was 72 years old when she passed on at her daughter’s home in Le Sueur on March 24, 1899.  They are both buried in the St. Thomas Catholic Church Cemetery
