Dennis O'Flaherty was born in Killmary, Co. Donegal, in Feb, 1834. He emigrated to the U.S. and to Illinois in 1853. In 1855, he married Margaret Brennan, also of Co. Donegal. Margaret and their children remained in Galena, IL, and Dennis traveled to Idaho to mine. He returned and farmed outside Galena. In 1871, they moved to Cedar Co., Nebraska, and farmed there. He was one of Cedar County's first County Commissioners. Dennis died in Feb., 1896, of la grippe, a contagious flu that was a common ailment of that time. He was buried on his 62nd birthday and was laid to rest in Tara Hill Cemetery in Dixon County, Nebraska.
