Edward Cahill was born to Patrick Cahill and Mary Devine in 1877 at Old Kicullen, Kildare.
He was the second eldest in a family of 13 or so. He worked in London as a Railway Policeman in his early youth and emigrated to Australia in 1906.
He settled in Sydney. His wife, Mary Smith, (or Morgan), from Rathvilly in Carlow, emigrated to Australia in 1913. The two met and married in 1918. They had three children, Patrick, Eileen and John.
