Edward was born in the parish of Liscannor (Touheran) in Oct/Nov 1824. His father was a carpenter, John Carroll, and he had two brothers, Michael and John. Edward was trained as a sawyer before leaving Ireland around 1847 for Carmarthen in Wales where he joined the County Constabulary. In September 1848 he married his first wife, Rachel Evans, daughter of the Reverend David Evans, Baptist minister of Ffynonhenry. After Rachel died in 1853 Edward married a Mary Anne Thomas in November that year, and after Mary died in 1856 he married a Martha Hughes in 1857. Altogether Edward was father to 8 children. In November 1859 Edward transferred to the Pembrokeshire Constabulary and served as a constable in that force until he retired in October 1886 on a pension of 15 shillings per week. He died in Jeffreyston, Pembrokeshire on 12 April 1900 and is buried in Martletwy.
