Back to List

My second great-grandfather, Edward Monaghan, was born March 1843 in Atticunnane/Atticaunan near Belmullet, Mayo, and baptised on the 8th of March. His parents were William Monaghan and Bridget (Biddy) Keane. Edward's siblings were Patrick W. (1839-1918) who, like Edward, emigrated to the U.S; also James (1841-1908), Bridget (1849-), Sibby (1851-), and Judy (1855-). The children after Edward were born in Doohoma, Mayo, where the family then lived.

Edward emigrated to Pennsylvania around 1868 and worked in the coal mines near Shenandoah and Girardville in Butler Township, Schuylkill County. in 1874 he married Ellen Hanley (1856-1932) who was born in Scotland of Irish parents: John Joseph Hanley Sr. (1833, POB unknown -1908) and Catharine Flynn (1835-1900), who was born in County Roscommon. Edward and Ellen had ten children who lived past childhood, including the eldest, my great-grandfather William Francis Monahan (1874-1943). He died in Philadelphia, PA, where I was born.

  • Hello, I have an ancestor named Catherine Monaghan who was born in about 1841. She married Michael Keane. I have a marriage record which could be theirs for a marriage in 1864 in Dingle.  They had their children in Belmullet, Mayo though. Their first child was Owen born in 1866.  Do you think this could be a relative of Edward Monaghan? Thanks

  • It could be, but there were so many Monaghans and Keanes in the area, it's hard to know for sure. I have DNA matches to Keanes (sometimes spelled Cain or Cane) in Kilmore Parish (Inishkea South and Fallmore), including Owen Patrick, but the dates aren't right (1844-95), and no Michael. If you've taken a DNA test and uploaded the results to Gedmatch, you can check my #: A285423.

  • Hello, I too have lots of matches to Keanes and various spellings thereof. My Gedmatch is A136029 - no match to yours unfortunately. Thank you for your reply, Sally

  • Hi, Michelle. I'm the original poster. Oddly, Ancestry says we are nor DNA matches or you didn't take a test. I wasn't able to access your family tree, and I'm not aware of any Furlongs in mine. Could you let me know how you think you are related to Edward?

  • Willam Monaghan (1818-1871) is my third great-grandfather. He was married to Bridget Keane (1815-1884). Their son Edward Monaghan (my 2nd great-grand-uncle, 1843-1930) appears to match your description - born in Attycunnane, Belmullet, County Mayo, Ireland, and died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.

That's odd that it doesn't show us as DNA matches as I have taken the test in Ancestry.

Here's the share-able link from my tree for Willam Monaghan: https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/pt/RSVP.aspx?dat=MTY2NTU1MDIxOzswN…

Willam's son, Patrick W. Monaghan (1839-1918) had a daughter Anna Monaghan (1874-1949) who married my great grandfather, Edward William Furlong (1878-1936). They were living in Norristown, PA, USA when they had my grandfather, Robert Emmett Furlong Sr. (1912-1987). Robert's son, Robert Emmett Furlong Jr. was my father (1937-1993).

I've found two cousins (through Ancestry DNA, well confirmed through Ancestry DNA), from my father's two sisters, and have found a half-sister that I didn't know I had.

I'm sure I'm listed as "Michelle Snowden" or "MS" and my tree is public, called "Michelle A. (Small/Furlong) Snowden Family Tree". What is your profile name or family tree name on Ancestry? I could try a search from my end.

I'm still waiting on my GEDmatch number to process. I can write here with it when it comes it. Who knows, maybe we're related?

  • Hi Jan,

    I finally generated a GEDMatch # : XD9206062

And have compared your GED # to mine with the "People who match both kits, or 1 of 2 kits" feature on the GEDMatch site.

If you're wellinja, we do have some matches in common 4, 5, 6 generations about however no DNA match, odd?

Let me know if you'd like for me to share the Edward Monaghan portion of my Ancestry public tree with you. (if you're on Ancestry).
