Eliza KEARNEY was born 11 November 1833 in Corrinshigo, Killevy Upper, County Armagh, Ireland, the daughter of Daniel KEARNEY a farmer and his wife Sarah CAMPBELL. Eliza had one brother, Daniel KEARNEY (c1830-7 Feb 1885) a stonecutter who married Ann HAGAN and had eight children in Corrishigo and Ballybot.
It is believed Eliza and Daniel were orphaned at an early age and while her brother stayed in the Newry area Eliza sailed to New South Wales as part of the Earl Grey scheme.
She married Bernard FOX in St Marys old cathedral Sydney on 17 May 1858 and after the birth of their first child, John in 1859, relocated to the south coast of New South Wales at Goondari Creek, near Wollongong. Seven more children were born in Wollongong.
The family moved to Swan Street in Wollongong across the road from the cemetery. Eliza died in her home on 12 November 1903.
Her obituary states-
Another very old and respected resident of the Illawarra district passed away very suddenly on Thursday morning, in the person of Mrs. Fox, wife of Bernard Fox. The old lady was in her usual health, which was always hale and hearty, on Wednesday, but early on Thursday morning she somewhat suddenly expired. The cause of death was heart disease. Mrs Fox was 69 years of age, and leaves a husband and grown up family to mourn their loss. The funeral took place yesterday, the internment being in the R.C. Cemetery, Rev. Father Byrne officiating at the grave. [Illawarra Mercury 14 Nov 1903]
