My great grandmother. Her name was originally Elizabeth Carney (and her mother's maiden name was Elizabeth McGlenn), but I have no definite evidence of Mr. Carney himself. The family story is that the two Elizabeths immigrated alone to the US in about 1870 when the younger was still an infant or small child. Various years are given for her birth, from 1868 to 1870, but always on Christmas Day. Sometime after Elizabeth's birth, her mother married James Murphy and had two more daughters with him, Annie Murphy b 1875 in Pennsylvania, USA and Nellie Murphy b. 1880 in Detroit, Michigan USA, where the family settled. In 1899, Elizabeth Carney (Murphy) married, under her stepfather's surname of Murphy, Joseph Sharon (Scharen), an immigrant from Switzerland 20 years her senior, an acquaintance of her stepfather, and they had six children in Detroit.
Although Great Grandma apparently always insisted she was born in Cork, my sister with the most "Irish" ethnicity (we're mostly Germanic) localizes to County Roscommon, and my sisters and I all have many DNA matches who are descendants of the McLuen family of Iowa, USA. Their origin was in Strokestown, County Roscommon. So, although she may have been born in Cork, it is probable that one or both of Elizabeth's parents came from Roscommon.
