Elizabeth Heaney 1859 : Short Biography

Hi,

My name is Cathy and my great great grandparents came from Co. Louth.  My Great Great Grandmother was Bridget Heeney - also spelled Heeny, Heany,

She married Thomas Mulligan (record not found) and they had four children that I know of.  They are:

Thomas, baptized 5 Oct 1832 - address Skyhill in Parish of Dundalk

Margaret, baptized 13 May 1835 - address Falmer in Parish of Dundalk

James, baptized 30 Aug 1841 - address Falmore in Parish of Dundalk - my great grandfather

Peter, baptized 18 Nov 1844 - address Falmer in Parish of Dundalk.

Do you think there is any connection with your Elizabeth?  Do you know her parent's names, location, etc.?  I know that one of James' daughters was named Elizabeth and this was why I thought there might be connection.  James and Peter went to New York City and at some point in time, so did Thoams and Bridget, who are buried with James' baby daughter Elizabeth in Calvary Cemetery , Queens, New York.

Hi Cathy,

My information is that Elizabeth was the daughter of Laurence Heaney and Elizabeth Magrane.

She was supposedly a twin, with a brother, Patrick.

But this is only from Ancestry, not a very reliable source.

My only concern with trying to find a link to your family is that there is a big gap between the 1844 birth of Peter, and Elizabeth's in 1859.

Having said that, would love to find out more about my beautiful great-great grandma and her background.

Hi Natalie,

I did some research and yes, Elizabeth and Patrick were twins.  It seems that they were the last of the children that I found - 7 in total.  I have the baptismal records if you'd like them.  Elizabeth Magrane also came up as Elizabeth Mcgrane and also as Eliza and it seems that it is necessary to search the names separately.  I did not locate a marriage record for the Laurence and Elizabeth and I do know there are gaps in the records.  I also could not find one for my Bridget Heeney and Thomas Mulligan which was probably about 1831.

The surname Heeney also came up as Heany, Heeny and this has been what I've found with my family''s research.  They did have a Bridget who was born in 1854 which would not have been my great great grandmother, but could have been the name of Laurence's aunt or another family member.  Couples did have children over a 20 year period so I do not discount  what is today considered a vast difference in ages in siblings.

If you would like copies of the baptismal records, please email me - Poochys@aol.com.  I'll scan and send them to you.  I had just worked with a man who had an ancestor whose surname was Heany, but that person was in Co. Wicklow.  He and I did have a small DNA connection.  Both counties are on the coast so it is possible that back in time there was a relationship.  People did move as a result of the famine.  Have you had any DNA tests taken?  If you have, would you share that information with me.  I have tested 7 different times.  I now live in Florida, USA.  

In October 2019, I went to Dublin where my daughter did a presentation for the Royal Dublin Society on how DNA expanded her family tree.  After that, we went to Dundalk.  I didn't find any anestral homes, just went to the Library and the Archives, but really didn't find anything I already didn't have.

Yes, have found those different spellings in the records, I usually try all iterations.

Haven't had any DNA testing done. Really don't like the idea of giving all my genetic information to a private company.

One major question I have yet to answer re Elizabeth Heaney, is how she got to NZ. Her burial record says she lived here for 65 years, which means she would have arrived aged about 12 years of age.

Nice to meet you! I think your Elizabeth is my relative.

Lawrence Heaney and Elizabeth Magrane are my 2nd great grandparents, and so that would make Elizabeth Heaney my great grand aunt.

I wonder if you know how many Heaney relatives from this family are here in the states. The Heaneys have become the Nulls, the Murthas, the Shevlins, the Geiblers, the Halfpennys, the Currys, and more.  Our part of the family tree includes 3 families of Heaneys and the Atkinsons.

I would love to know more about our family dating before Lawrence and Elizabeth.  Do you know who their parents were? Also, you didn't mention how you are related to Elizabeth.

Correction to my earlier post. The Heaney descendants in the US are not the Murthas, Shevlins, etc. They are the Nulls, the Biskups, the Lorimers, the Mehrs, etc.
