Migrated to/Born in USA

I am trying to determine when and where my Great Great Grandparents, Patrick Connell (B abt1813 - D?) and Elizabeth Ward (B abt1810 - D1882 or 83 America) were born and possibly married in Ireland. She might have been born in Mullingar, Westmeath to Thomas Ward (1874-1860) and Mary Morgan (1790-1883). They emigrated (Separately? Together?) to America before 1840 and settled in Pittston, Pennsylvania. He was a coal miner. They had 8 children. The Censuses say all were born in America, but census reports are not always correct. Was their eldest Mary born in Ireland or America? I have found no record of his death She died in Scranton, Pennsylvania in 1883.

More facts/questions:

  • Possible parents, cannot determine for sure? –  Thomas Ward and MAry Morgan?
  • Did Patrick and Elizabeth marry in Ireland?
  • Did they have their first child in Ireland?
  • Emigrated to America sometime before 1840 (American 1840 Census has them in Pittston)
  • Children: Mary (1841?-1906), Michael (1842-1912), Catherine (1846-1883), James J (1847-1884), Daniel F (1849-1917), John R (1850-1914), Peter (1853-1899), Patrick T (1856-1919)    I looked into Irish naming conventions in order to find Elizabeth's parents, but no pattern showed up.

Lots of unanswered questions….definitely in need of some help!

As civil registration didn't start in Ireland until 1864, it will be very difficult to locate where your Great Great Grandparents were born, from the records you have given us here. The only records from that time are catholic parish records. There are three catholic parishes in Mullingar and sixty-three townlands.  These records are on the National Library of Ireland website but the only way of searching them is by going through each page individually,The website is https://registers.nli.ie/ .  Perhaps, some of the US census records may show a relation who was living with the family at some stage and you might be able to trace family in that way!   Sorry I can't be of any further help but if you find out any more information, please post it here and I will try to help in any way I can.

  • Thanks for responding.I have looked on the NLI website and have found it very hard to determine the correct Patrick Connell. It doesn't help that his name was so common, and that his ages on the US censuses do not agree on a common birth year. I am saddened that none of my older cousins thought to ask our Grandmother, Mary Connell Anderson, about her grandfather before she died in the 1950s. Genealogy was not the thing back then, as it is now.  All of our Connel-Anderson aunts an uncles have also passsed away, which makes for even more uncertainty. At least I found Patrick and Elizabeth on "this side of the pond"! Thanks, again.   Natalie
