Either Emily or her daughter godparented for Mary Jane Maxwell, the daughter of their cousin Brigid Farrell. Thomas Cody died on 11 Mar 1880. After his death, Emily began struggling to pay rent on their home. In 1881, she had a dispute with Thomas Maxwell, husband of her cousin Brigid, who claimed she was refusing to pay him for blacksmith work done for her. The Maxwells were on the verge of being evicted at the time. The argument was settled between them and neither appeared for the day in court. In January 1892, when it was just Emily and her son Edward living at home, she was called to court by the Earl of Meath, who owned a lot of land in Rathdrum. She and Garret Byrne were accused of not paying their rent of £16. She and Edward insisted the rent was only £12 and they would gladly pay it but only the amount they were supposed to pay. However, the judge ordered them to pay the full £16.

By 1901, Emily and Edward and bought their house and land under the Land Commission Act. Her grandson Edward Rochford was living with them. They lived next door to her nephew Edward Megan. However by 1911, Emily had sold up their land and moved up to Dublin with Emily Rochford (nee Cody), Edward Rochford and her son Edward. They lived at 14 William's Place, North Dock, Dublin.
