Francis James O'Neil was born in Benburg, Tyrone Co to James O'Neil and Nancy nee: Hughes.   His father died of a nose bleed when he was 5 years old.   He had an older sister, Hanorah, and a younger brother John Hughes.   When his father died his mother took him and his siblings to Glasgow, Scotland where he grew to a man.  Married Rosa Hoy and had 8 children.  He and the family migrated to the United States in 1847 and settled in Wisconsin.    In 1855, his wife died and he remarried a widow, Elizabeth Nevin Pixley from Paisley, Scotland.  Born to this union were 7 children.  In 1866, they migrated to Iowa via a covered wagon and settled in the Maple Valley.  Farmed a bit and eventually built and ran a hotel in Mapleton until his death in 1890.
