Harriet Vokes 1852

Back to List

Harriet was my great grandmother. She was born in Adare in County Limerick, and her father's name was John, based on her marriage registration. That's all I know for sure. The family story is that she had older sisters Mary and Kate and that she was orphaned at a young age. In 1872 she married Jeffrey Donahue in Nenagh, County Tipperary in June, and gave birth to a son Thomas in July, and sailed for America, arriving in New York in October. Thomas died "soon after" arriving in the US. Harriet and her husband had 9 more children, all of whom lived to adulthood.

The picture shows Harriet with one of her grandchildren, who was born in 1912.

Harriet died in 1928 in Essex County, New York, USA.  New York State Death Index - 1927 by Reclaim The Records 8 Jun, Moriah. #38718

I have a few stories from her youngest daughter, who I knew well, and  I wish I had known this woman, who to me, personifies the strength one must adopt to overcome adversity.
