Hugh Beattie, son of John Beatty, was born circa 1817 in Clonfeacle, Armargh, Northern Ireland. On 13th March 1840 Hugh married Mary Rolston at Clonfeacle. Hugh and Mary emigrated to Australia with assisted passage departing Britain on the Sailing Ship “Champion” at the end of 1841 arriving in Sydney, Australia 12th February 1842. The family grew with 12 children growing to adulthood and they settled in a number of locations finally putting down roots as a pioneering family at Wagga Wagga NSW in the 1860’s. Hugh and Mary’s descendants produced some very notable individuals including Dame Mary Gilmore (Granddaughter to Hugh) who was given a prestigious ‘State’ funeral by the NSW Government. The Australian Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, is a descendant of Hugh and Mary.
